Some celebrities and individuals are cancelling their Facebook accounts to protest the insidious use of personal data without their permission or knowledge. I just listened to a documentary that recommends another approach. Far more effective than cancelling, or waiting for self- or government regulation, experts say, is give Facebook and other social media firms incorrect data. Where they ask for your birthday, give an incorrect date. Where they ask for other personal information, supply them with something, just not the truth. If enough people do this, say the experts, the firms will be unable to sell and use personal data. That’s just your thought for the day.
