Dadreads 300x300

“My dad didn’t read with us much at all, but we had a huge collection of children’s books in our house, and I remember my grandfather always reading the newspaper. I also have lots of fond memories of my sister, who is two years older than me, taking us to the library and reading to me. The important part was the popsicle afterwards.

“But really, my relationship with reading came through my grandfather’s, father’s, and uncle’s storytelling; I wanted to understand these stories. Boys in particular need to not just read, but build a relationship with reading. There’s a big difference.”

—Dhanook Singh, former reluctant reader, now a science teacher
